As the leaves start to change and the temperature drops, it’s time to transition your wardrobe for autumn. This season is all about layering, cosy textures, and rich colours. Most good wardrobes need a mix of casual, practical, smart and statement items. Spending money on practical items isn’t anywhere near as thrilling as buying a cool new dress. However, I know that my wardrobe needs to be balanced for it to be truly functional.
The start of a new season is a great time to reflect on what you have in the wardrobe from last year and what is worth keeping. There might be some items that you didn’t love last autumn and doubt you’ll wear again, or maybe they look a bit dated now. If that’s the case then clear them out, get rid of that clutter.
My go-to list would be as follows…
1. A long-sleeved autumn / winter dress
This will work perfectly for day or evening paired with long boots and a leather jacket / coat.
2. A couple of nice tops
Always an essential to have in my wardrobe - a blouse or long sleeved top paired with a pair of jeans or wide leg trousers will work great as a casual outfit with trainers or dressed up with heels / boots.
3. Chunky knit sweaters
A chunky knit sweater is a must-have for autumn. Opt for neutral colours like beige, grey, or cream for versatility. Pair them with jeans for a casual look or layer over a dress for added warmth.
4. Jeans / Wide-leg trousers
Wide-leg trousers or jeans offer comfort and warmth while still looking chic. Pair them with a fitted jumper or a tucked-in blouse to balance the silhouette. Wide leg and bootcut are the jeans of the moment but I have to say I am still reluctant to give up my skinny jeans!
5. Classic trench coat
The trench coat is a timeless piece that instantly elevates any outfit. It's perfect for those unpredictable autumn days when it might drizzle or get a bit windy. A classic beige or camel-coloured trench coat is a versatile choice that can be dressed up or down.
6. Knee-high boots / Chunky boots
Boots are the perfect footwear for autumn. They provide the right amount of coverage for cooler days and are great under dresses or skirts.
7. Leather jacket
A leather jacket adds a touch of edge to your autumn wardrobe. It's a versatile layering piece that pairs well with everything from jeans to dresses. Black is a classic choice, but you can also consider shades like dark brown or deep burgundy for a seasonal twist.
8. Blazer
It can be worn casually with jeans or dressed up with tailored trousers.
Final Tips:
- Layering is key: Autumn weather can be unpredictable, so layering is essential. Have fun mixing and matching different textures and colours to create stylish, layered looks.
- Accessorise: Don’t forget to accessorise with hats, gloves, and jewellery to add personal touches to your outfits.
- Comfort and functionality: Choose pieces that are not only stylish but also comfortable and functional for the cooler weather.
Lastly, take this opportunity to declutter your wardrobe. Store away your summer clothing and bring your autumn essentials to the forefront. This will make getting dressed in the morning a breeze!
With these key pieces in your wardrobe, you'll be ready to embrace the autumn season in style!
